Augmentation of conventional medical management of moderately severe or severe asthma with acupuncture and guided imagery/meditation.

چکیده
OBJECTIVE I sought to determine if a combination of acupuncture and guided imagery could augment the conventional medical management of moderately severe or severe asthma. DESIGN This was an early-phase study with a convenience sample of self-selecting patients compared with self-year before, during treatment, and one year after treatment. SETTING PATIENTS were recruited from an outpatient practice. PATIENTS All participants were adults with moderately severe or severe asthma (class 3 or 4). INTERVENTIONS The study employed acupuncture and guided imagery/meditation for a 24-week period. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The main outcome measures were number of days of hospitalization, number of Emergency Department (ED) visits, number of physician visits, days per year taking steroids, puffs per week of inhaled β-agonists, FVC (forced vital capacity), FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in the first second), and FEF25-75 (forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of the FVC). RESULTS With the addition of acupuncture and guided imagery to conventional medical management, members of the study group experienced improvement. The number of hospitalized days and the number of ED visits not leading to hospitalizations decreased, as did number of medical visits and total days taking oral corticosteroids. Parameters of respiratory function improved despite reduced use of inhaled β-agonists. CONCLUSION With acupuncture and guided imagery and meditation together, a self-selecting group of patients with moderately severe or severe asthma experienced improvement in respiratory function, taking less medication than before and having fewer emergencies and hospitalizations at a lower cost of care.

Comparison of real and placebo acupuncture in histamine-induced asthma. A double-blind crossover study.
A double-blind crossover study of the effects of real and placebo acupuncture on bronchial reactivity to histamine was carried out on 16 patients with moderately severe asthma. Treatment with real or placebo acupuncture failed to modulate the bronchial hyperreactivity to histamine. These results suggest that a single treatment with acupuncture is unlikely to provide improvement in the managemen...
متن کاملThe neuroimmune basis of anti-inflammatory acupuncture.
This review article presents the evidence that the antiinflammatory actions of acupuncture are mediated via the reflexive central inhibition of the innate immune system. Both laboratory and clinical evidence have recently shown the existence of a negative feedback loop between the autonomic nervous system and the innate immunity. There is also experimental evidence that the electrical stimulati...

Background: IL-17 is a major cytokine player in T cell mediated leukocyte associated inflammation. IL-17 is also recognized to participate in the pathophysiology of asthma. Objective: To determine the role of IL-17 in predicting severe asthma. Methods: We obtained serum samples from asthmatic children under the age of 5-year in three different groups of mild (n=33), moderate (n=28) and severe (...

Severe combined immunodeficiency is a rare, fatal syndrome of diverse genetic cause in which there is combined absence of T-lymphocyte and B-lymphocyte function (and in many cases also natural killer, or NK lymphocyte function). These defects lead to extreme susceptibility to serious infections. Without intervention, the T and B-cell dysfunction usually results in severe infection and death in ...
